I Wish I Had Known

I wish I had known

That God had a plan for my life.

Then I wouldn’t have had to experiment with drugs and men,

Trying to ‘find myself.’

I wish I had known

That my price is far above rubies, above millions of dollars.

Then I wouldn’t have traded my body

For a lobster dinner and some affection.

I wish I had known

That every time I laid down with a man

A piece of my soul was stripped away

And I was infused with his spirit forever.

Then I wouldn’t have had

To lose my soul.

I wish I had known

That prostitution meant more than trading sex for money;

It’s trading sex for attention,

For favor, or to be a friend with benefits.

Then I wouldn’t have had to prostitute my beautiful body

Throwing my pearls to swine.

I wish I had known

Men would say anything to get sex.

Then I wouldn’t have believed they loved me

And I wouldn’t have been stripped of my dignity

When they got what they wanted

And left me.

I wish I had known

That when you chase a boy and get him,

He goes along for the ride,

But will never respect you

Because he hasn’t earned you.

Then I wouldn’t have had my heart torn to shreds

By countless men who enjoyed the ride

But dissed me.

I wish I had known

That the Bible was an instruction manual for life.

Then I wouldn’t have had to figure this all out

On my own.
